We're recruiting a PhD student :

Project background and description

Neural stem cells are metabolically adapted to the low oxygen environment of their niche within the developing fetal brain. Unlike many other progenitor cells, they are also capable of sustaining proliferation in the face of malnutrition, hypoxia and related metabolic stresses. Currently very little is known about the metabolic mechanisms that protect developing neural stem cells and their niche from stress. Research in our laboratory aims to identify protective metabolic enzymes and metabolites by harnessing the advanced genetics of the fruit fly Drosophila, then following up key conserved functions in mammals.
