Job description


The University Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC) is recruiting a tenure eligible investigator in the field of neurobiology to the study of the gustatory system in Drosophila, specifically in the laboratory “Centre des Sciences du Goût et de l’Alimentation” ( located in Dijon (France) and jointly operated by CNRS (French National Scientific Research Centre). This position is supported by the French “Investissements d’Avenir” program, project ISITE-BFC. 


We encourage applications of outstanding scientists investigating this field of research owning a PhD degree, featuring at least three years of postdoctoral experience; a substantive record of publications and the potential to develop an independent research program.

The successful applicant will be provided a 450 k¤ grant (including her/his salary and research budget) for a period of three years. The salary will be negotiated on the basis of education and experience. It integrates a benefit package including retirement, health insurance, annual and sick leave.

The tenure eligible position will be provided by CNRS (according to its own recruitment procedure) during the tenure probation period. During the same period, the successful candidate will be committed to apply for an European Research Council (ERC) grant.

Understanding how we perceive and respond to our environment such as food is one of many central questions in life sciences. The CSGA mainly focuses on the biological and psychological bases of eating behavior and of sensory perception using key biological models. For this purpose the CSGA aims to get a better understanding to the physicochemical, molecular, cellular, physiological, behavioral and psychological mechanisms underlying sensory perception of food and eating behavior including taste and olfaction. The studies range from the release or presence of various molecules from or within the food matrix to the behavioral outputs, through the biological events and the neuronal networks of sensory perceptions and detections in physiological or pathological context.

In order to reinforce and develop the field of taste understanding at CSGA we are seeking a young dynamic principal investigator to develop a scientific project related to taste perception of food, using Drosophila melanogaster as a genetic model. Understanding how behaviors emerge from the combinatorial activity of neural networks is a central question in neuroscience. Drosophila with its small nervous systems where behaviors are traceable and measurable can help solving the rationale behind them. The gustatory system of Drosophila melanogaster is a perfect model to answer this kind of scientific question since this specific neuronal circuit can be traced, modified and activated with a growing wide-spectrum of genetic tools. Indeed the taste neuronal network from the periphery to the central brain centers is more and more documented into details in this insect model. But how sensory information is integrated and decision-making processed is still a challenging field of investigation despite recent breakthroughs. The candidate will develop this kind of key basic questions. He.she will benefit from existing equipment material and facilities already present at the CSGA, especially the team led by Dr. Yaël Grosjean “Sensory perception, Interactions between Glia and Neurons” that recently housed an ERC starting grant award ( working on the same model. This will allow him.her to attract independent grants to settle and to develop his.her own research project and team to study the gustatory system in Drosophila.

Targeted profile

We seek candidates with a PhD degree and significant post-doctoral experience who have demonstrated excellence in research. Candidates should have a significant record of publications and the potential to develop an independent research program in the field of taste perception of food, using Drosophila melanogaster as a genetic model. It will be important that candidates have a very good knowledge of the gustatory system of Drosophila melanogaster. He.she will be expected to propose a project to focus on how sensory information is integrated and decision-making being processed.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • establish an independent, innovative, and internationally-competitive research program that will attract extramural funding even though internal supports will be provided to allow the best start,
  • participate in the local scientific life.

Areas of particular interest for this position are projects centered on the study of taste perception of food, using Drosophila melanogaster as a genetic model. The position comes with a competitive starting package and running budget.
