PhD STUDENT POSITION

Full-time Fixed-term (3 years) for a PhD student

THE HEARING INSTITUTE (PARIS)

The Hearing Institute (https://www.institut-audition.fr/en) seeks to hire a PhD student to join the team Neural Coding and Engineering of Human Speech Functions (Dir. Anne-Lise GIRAUD).

Our laboratory is interested in understanding the computations that enable our brain to perceive and produce speech from a fundamental perspective in order to design targeted therapies for neurodevelopmental and acquired speech disorders (aphasia, dyslexia, stuttering, autism and deafness).

This position is open as part of an ANR promoted research led by Dr. Sophie BOUTON.

Project Summary:

This project aims at investigating the developmental course of sensory-motor interactions in language acquisition. Specifically, we will use MEG recordings while children perceive audio-visual stimuli of natural speech, combined with long-term audio recordings of everyday speech interactions measuring the quantity and quality of children's speech production. This will allow us to determine whether the emergence of an oscillatory interplay between sensory and motor areas would underlie speech acquisition.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate should have:

  • a Master in Neurosciences, Cognitive Science, or Cognitive Psychology;
  • experience with neuroimaging (mastery of several methods is a plus) along with programming and statistical skills (Python, Matlab, R or similar);
  • ample experience designing psychology experiments is also required;
  • strong language and writing skills in English are required;
  • speaking French is not required but the candidate will have to learn French to interact with families.

Starting Date:

The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. The expected start date is June 2022. The position is for 3 years.
